Basketball Game Preview: Weslaco East Wildcats vs. Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets

Weslaco East is on a 14-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Edcouch-Elsa is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Weslaco East Wildcats will welcome the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Last Tuesday, Weslaco East strolled past Harlingen South with points to spare, taking the game 46-32. Given the Wildcats' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 316th, while the Hawks are ranked 844th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, Edcouch-Elsa hadn't done well against Pace recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Edcouch-Elsa sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 51-49 win over Pace. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Yellowjackets have posted since December 2, 2023.

Weslaco East better focus on containing Rolly Garza and Erasmo Tamez as the pair were huge in Edcouch-Elsa's win. Garza went 5 for 7 en route to 16 points, while Tamez posted 14 points and five rebounds. Garza's evening made it eight games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Anthony Ramirez was another key player, putting up six points and five boards.

Edcouch-Elsa smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in six consecutive games.

Weslaco East's win bumped their record up to 21-4. As for Edcouch-Elsa, their victory bumped their record up to 10-8.
