Football Recap: Mount Airy Piles Up the Points Against West Stokes

Mount Airy waltzed into their matchup on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They breezed past the West Stokes Wildcats to the tune of 37-3. Given the Granite Bears' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 71st, while the Wildcats are ranked 305th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Mount Airy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ty Hemric led the charge by throwing for 204 yards and three touchdowns on only nine passes. The Granite Bears' leading receiver Zach Goins was Hemric's top target yet again, picking up 142 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.

Another reason for the win was Mount Airy's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Ethan Clabo and DJ Joyce, who racked up all five sacks between them. Clabo also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with 11.

Mount Airy's record now sits at 5-2. As for West Stokes, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-6.

That game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Taeshon Martin and Keanu Escalante. Meanwhile, West Stokes is set to square off against their familiar foe East Surry at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
