Softball Game Preview: Downey Vikings vs. Mayfair Monsoons

The Downey Vikings are taking a road trip to square off against the Mayfair Monsoons at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Downey will be strutting in after a win while Mayfair will be coming in after a loss.

Downey is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They were the clear victors by an 18-3 margin over North on Saturday. The result was nothing new for the Vikings, who have now won eight games by eight runs or more so far this season.

Giana Castillo-Flores was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. Castillo-Flores was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Downey got a massive performance out of Hayden Hinchman, who scored three runs while going 3-for-3. Those three hits gave Hinchman a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jiselle Rocha, who scored three runs while going 3-for-4.

Downey always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .658. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Mayfair was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-4 heartbreaker at the hands of Woodrow Wilson.

The victory made it two in a row for Downey and bumps their season record up to 12-4. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.5 runs over those games. As for Mayfair, their loss dropped their record down to 9-8.

Downey took their victory against Mayfair in their previous matchup back in March by a conclusive 10-2 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Vikings since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
