Given the Bears' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 352nd, while the Minutemen are ranked 1501st), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Lacey Matney, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds. She is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Alana Afflerbach, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 boards.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cuero). They really took it to San Antonio Memorial for the full four quarters, racking up a 76-10 win. With the Gobblers ahead 50-5 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
La Vernia better keep an eye on Arissa Carbonara. She was instrumental in Cuero's win, dropping a double-double on 22 points and 12 rebounds. Carbonara has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more boards the last 17 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Mauryana Dasilva, who posted 11 points and three steals.
Cuero smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in seven consecutive matchups.
Cuero has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 15 of their last 16 games, which provided a nice bump to their 27-6 record this season. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 27.4 points per game. As for La Vernia, their victory bumped their record up to 19-9.
