Basketball Recap: Homestead Comes Up Short

Homestead lost against Doral Academy back in January of 2021 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Homestead Broncos opened the new year with a less-than-successful 46-36 loss to the Doral Academy Firebirds. The matchup marked the Broncos' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Despite the defeat, Homestead saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Rodney Holmes dropped a double-double on 14 points and 15 boards. Holmes is crushing it when it comes to boards: he's pulled down at least ten every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Jaiden Horton, who posted 12 points.

Even though they lost, Homestead smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

Homestead dropped their record down to 6-6 with the loss, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for Doral Academy, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-2.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Homestead will face off against South Miami at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Doral Academy, they will take on Calusa Prep at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
