Basketball Recap: Rocky Mount Takes a Loss

Rocky Mount kicked off their season on the road on Saturday and hit a couple of potholes. They took a 39-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Chapel Hill Tigers.

Despite the loss, Rocky Mount still got an impressive performance from Kira Jones, who went 6-for-13 to rack up 20 points in addition to five boards and five steals. Jones is on a roll when it comes to points, as she's now scored 20 or more in each of the last five games she's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Shania Wilson, who posted five points and seven steals.

Chapel Hill's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Scarlett Gilner, who dropped a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds. Those 17 points gave Gilner a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Zoe Smith, who had eight points along with seven boards and six steals.

The win was the third in a row for Chapel Hill, bringing their record up to 3-0.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Rocky Mount will face off against SouthWest Edgecombe at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Chapel Hill, they will challenge Seaforth at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
