Softball Recap: Elk Grove Comes Up Short

Palatine hit Elk Grove with a four-run fifth inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Grenadiers took a 7-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pirates. The Grenadiers were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Pirates earlier this season, when they won 12-2.

Kaitlin Wirtz was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Elk Grove's loss was their fourth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 10-13. As for Palatine, with the victory, they broke their five-game losing streak and moved their record to 14-17-1.

Elk Grove and Palatine could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Grenadiers will face off against Taft at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday with a big rank disadvantage (270 vs. 117). Meanwhile, Palatine (ranked 254th) will meet Hampshire (ranked 94th) at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
