Basketball Recap: Brennen Carpenter's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Calhoun over Clay County

If Calhoun was riding high fresh off their 81-36 takedown of Meadow Bridge last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Calhoun Red Devils fell 73-60 to the Clay County Panthers on Tuesday. The Red Devils were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Panthers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Several Red Devils players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Brennen Carpenter, who posted 18 points in addition to seven assists and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Cooper Morris, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 13 boards.

Even though they lost, Calhoun smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 18 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Calhoun has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season. As for Clay County, their victory ended a 14-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 5-9.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Calhoun will venture away from home to take on Gilmer County at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Gilmer County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully Calhoun likes a good challenge. As for Clay County, they will head out on the road to challenge Midland Trail at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Midland Trail is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.9 points per game this season.
