Basketball Recap: Port Jefferson Comes Up Short at Home Against Miller Place

Port Jefferson unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They fell just short of the Miller Place Panthers by a score of 53-51 on Saturday. The matchup was a 28-28 toss-up at halftime, but the Royals couldn't quite close it out.

Leading Miller Place to victory were Julie Orenzo and Ava Zicchinelli. Orenzo posted 21 points, while Zicchinelli earned 24 points. The dominant performance gave Zicchinelli a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooke Callaghan, who put up six points.

Miller Place's win ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-5.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Port Jefferson will venture away from home to take on Babylon at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for Miller Place, they are taking a road trip to face off against Islip at 6:45 p.m. on Monday.
