Recap: West Cabarrus Wolverines vs. East Mecklenburg Eagles
The West Cabarrus Wolverines waltzed into their matchup Friday with two straight wins but they left with three. They walked away with a 60-53 victory over East Mecklenburg. That's two games straight that West Cabarrus has won by exactly seven points.
Gianni Vines continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 16 points. The matchup was his fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Correll Johnson, who scored 12 points.
East Mecklenburg lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Ahmari Hicks, who scored 21 points. Hicks scored a full 39.6% of East Mecklenburg's points, the fifth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordan Buzzard, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds.
Even though they lost, East Mecklenburg were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West Cabarrus only pulled down three offensive rebounds.
The win got West Cabarrus back to even at 5-5. As for East Mecklenburg, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-4 record this season.
West Cabarrus and Sports Leadership & Management will face off at 7:30 p.m. on December 30, 2023 without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Sports Leadership & Management knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past eight games -- so hopefully West Cabarrus likes a good challenge. East Mecklenburg and Independence will face off at 6:00 p.m. on December 30, 2023 without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hopefully Independence focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 on Friday.
