Football Preview: Lake Norman Wildcats vs. Asheville Cougars
The Lake Norman Wildcats will take on the Asheville Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
On Monday, Lake Norman came up short against Statesville and fell 28-21.
The losing side was boosted by Haines Robitzer, who threw for 256 yards and a touchdown, and also punched in a rushing score. Cooper Riggleman also helped out with an impressive 98 receiving yards.
Meanwhile, Asheville gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener last Friday. They really took it to Tuscola for the full four quarters, racking up a 42-6 victory at home. With the Cougars ahead 29-0 at the half, the match was all but over already.
Josh Ellis had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 195 yards and three touchdowns on only nine carries, and also caught a touchdown. He really tore up the turf during one magnificent 78-yard run. Meek Slydell was another key player, throwing for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
Asheville wouldn't let Tuscola keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Asheville can thank Kareem Williams and Hayes Hillier for forcing both of them. Williams also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, forcing a fumble and making six total tackles.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Asheville was moving up and down the field and finished the game with 470 total yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Tuscola only gained 202.
Everything came up roses for Lake Norman against Asheville when the teams last played back in September of 2023 as the squad secured a 34-7 win. Will Lake Norman repeat their success, or does Asheville have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
