Basketball Recap: Bayfield Comes Up Short

Bayfield was the 58-43 winner over Monte Vista when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Bayfield Wolverines took a 44-40 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Monte Vista Pirates.

Despite the defeat, Bayfield saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Hayes Malone posted 11 points.

Azariah Hurtado was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds for Monte Vista. Those 17 boards gave Hurtado a new career-high. Kaden Madrid was another key player, putting up ten points and six rebounds.

Bayfield's loss dropped their record down to 12-8. As for Monte Vista, the victory got them back to even at 10-10.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Bayfield will face off against Telluride at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Bayfield is facing Telluride at the right time seeing as Telluride is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Monte Vista, they will host Montezuma-Cortez at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Hurtado and Trey Hall.
