Baseball Game Preview: Downingtown West Whippets vs. East Vikings

The Downingtown West Whippets will challenge the East Vikings at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

East will be up against a hot Downingtown West squad: the team just extended their winning streak to three. The Whippets blew past Bishop Shanahan 7-1 on Wednesday.

James Posner was a major factor no matter where he played. He pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Downingtown West is 2-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 5-10 otherwise. Posner was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with three runs. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Austen Frye tossed a big game, tossing 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, Zach Slade was excellent, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one double, and one RBI. Daniel Kershner also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask East). Everything went their way against Sun Valley on Monday as they made off with a 12-2 win. The high-scoring effort was just what the Vikings needed considering they were shut out in their previous matchup.

East is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.1 runs over those games. As for Downingtown West, they pushed their record up to 7-11 with the win, which was their third straight at home.
