Basketball Recap: Smithville Takes a Loss

Smithville and Wheeler squared off in some playoff action on Monday, but Smithville had to settle for second. They came up short against the Wheeler Eagles, falling 54-28. If the Seminoles were looking for revenge after losing 48-28 to them when the teams met back in November of 2021, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Despite the loss, Smithville still got an impressive performance from Mikayla Wall, who posted 16 points in addition to six steals and five boards. Wall has become a key player for Smithville: the team is 14-6 when she posts at least three steals, but 2-6 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Halle Sargent, who earned four points and three blocks.

Wheeler found their leader in freshman Paisley Lane, who went 5-for-9 en route to 15 points and six rebounds. What's more, Lane also posted a 56% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest she's posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Emma Kate Beckham, who put up 11 points and seven boards.

This is the second loss in a row for Smithville and nudges their season record down to 16-12. As for Wheeler, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 19-12 record this season.

Smithville does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Wheeler, they will head out on the road to square off against Hickory Flat at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hickory Flat has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
