Basketball Recap: Piper Kovacs' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Cromwell over Academy of Science and Innovation

On Thursday, the Cromwell Panthers ended up a good deal behind the Academy of Science and Innovation Ravens and lost 60-43. While the Panthers didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Ravens 17-10 in the first quarter.

Several Panthers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Piper Kovacs, who went 6-for-9 en route to 13 points. Those 13 points gave Kovacs a new career-high. Chloe Crawford was another key player, putting up ten points.

Even though they lost, Cromwell smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in three consecutive matchups.

Academy of Science and Innovation's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Symber Sutton led the charge by going 8-for-12 on her way to 16 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Another player making a difference was Maiara Rodriguez, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and ten assists.

Cromwell's loss dropped their record down to 9-11. As for Academy of Science and Innovation, the win (which was their 11th in a row) raised their record to 17-2.

Looking ahead, Cromwell will venture away from home to face off against Coginchaug Regional at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Coginchaug Regional knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past three games -- so hopefully Cromwell likes a good challenge. As for Academy of Science and Innovation, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 31-19 victory against Bridgeport International Academy/Academy of Aerospace and Engineering on the 14th.
