Preview: Weir Red Riders vs. Oak Glen Golden Bears
Weir is 9-1 against Oak Glen since December of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Weir Red Riders will head out on the road to face off against the Oak Glen Golden Bears at 7:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Weir's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their fourth straight loss. They received a tough blow as they fell 76-59 to Williamstown. While losing is never fun, Weir can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 549th, while Williamstown is ranked 11th).
Despite the loss, Weir got a solid performance out of Colin Cross, who scored 28 points along with six rebounds. That was a full 47.5% of Weir's points, marking the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Dashawd Smith was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with two steals.
Meanwhile, Oak Glen's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 70-59 to Brooke, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.
Despite the defeat, Oak Glen saw an underclassman step up: A J Ramgeet scored 25 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Evans, who scored 13 points.
Weir has been struggling recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-10 record this season. As for Oak Glen, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-9.
Keep an eye on the arc in Tuesday's contest: Weir have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 7.1 threes per game. However, it's not like Oak Glen struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.2 threes per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Weir took their win against Oak Glen when the teams last played back in December of 2023 by a conclusive 70-50. The rematch might be a little tougher for Weir since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
