Preview: Westfield Shamrocks vs. Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles
Westfield has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Winning is just a little bit easier when your three-point shooting is a whole 23% better than the opposition, a fact Westfield proved on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 59-40 win over Zionsville.
Westfield got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Nic Book out in front who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 10 rebounds. Charles Farrell was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with 5 assists and 3 steals.
Meanwhile, Guerin Catholic put another one in the bag on Saturday to keep their perfect season alive. They strolled past Hamilton Heights with points to spare, taking the game 52-38. Given Guerin Catholic's advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 25th, while Hamilton Heights is ranked 242nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Robert Sorensen, who scored 22 points. The matchup was his fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Dylan Murans, who scored 11 points.
Their wins bumped Westfield to 3-0 and Zionsville to 1-1.
Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday's contest: Westfield have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having averaged 9.7 threes per game. It's a different story for Guerin Catholic, though, as they've been averaging only 5 per game. Given Westfield's sizeable advantage in that area, Guerin Catholic will need to find a way to close that gap. Westfield strolled past Guerin Catholic when the teams last played back in December of 2022 by a score of 59-43. The rematch might be a little tougher for Westfield since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
