Football Game Preview: Huntsville Hornets vs. Marshall Mavericks + How To Watch

The Huntsville Hornets are taking a road trip to square off against the Marshall Mavericks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Huntsville not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since September 5th (when they won 58-0). They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Splendora 47-0. Given the Hornets' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 320th, while the Wildcats are ranked 920th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Traeshawn Brown and Luther Joiner III were among the main playmakers for Huntsville as the former rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries and the latter rushed for 41 yards and three scores. Brown has become a key player for the Hornets: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two rushing touchdowns, but 2-3 otherwise.

Huntsville didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Splendora to a completion percentage of just 42.1%. The team can thank David Brown for the heroic effort on defense: he. Huntsville has been improving in that area: they had allowed a completion percentage of 0.58 earlier this season, but they've only allowed one of 0.58 in their last three games.

Huntsville's defense also made the game a nightmare for Brayden Hinton, racking up seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Wesley Heinemann and Jailen Baldwin, who racked up five sacks between them.

Meanwhile, Marshall had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 33.3 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They took their contest with ease, bagging a 49-7 win over the Wildcats. The Mavericks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four games by 30 points or more this season.

Marshall's win came from a few key players Huntsville will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Denijh Montgomery, who rushed for 78 yards and four TDs on only ten carries. Those four rushing touchdowns gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alton Henderson, who threw for 195 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 16 passes.

Huntsville's record now sits at 6-4. As for Marshall, their record is now 8-2.

Huntsville took their victory against Marshall in their previous meeting back in November of 2019 by a conclusive 35-12 score. Will the Hornets repeat their success, or do the Mavericks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
