Basketball Recap: Maritime Academy Charter Takes a Loss

If Maritime Academy Charter was riding high fresh off their 73-53 takedown of South Philadelphia last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Maritime Academy Charter Seadogs were beaten by the Lincoln Leadership Academy Lions 82-51 on Saturday. While losing is never fun, the Seadogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 595th, while the Lions are ranked 169th).

When it comes to explaining why Maritime Academy Charter lost, don't look at Jayriel Arroyo. Despite the final result, he went 8 for 20 en route to 24 points. Arroyo has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last eight times he's played. Another player making a difference was Jadin Aviles, who posted eight points and seven steals.

Even though they lost, Maritime Academy Charter smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in seven consecutive games.

Lincoln Leadership Academy was led to victory by Dwight Prud'Homme and Robert Baker. Prud'Homme went 9 of 18 on his way to 21 points along with eight rebounds and four steals, while Baker went 8 for 12 en route to 19 points in addition to five boards and three steals. The dominant performance gave Prud'Homme a new career-high in steals. Emil Rodriquez was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on nine points and ten rebounds.

Maritime Academy Charter's loss dropped their record down to 7-10. As for Lincoln Leadership Academy, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-2 record this season.

Maritime Academy Charter wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 73-71 win against Freire Charter on the 21st. As for Lincoln Leadership Academy, they will be playing at home against Notre Dame at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Lincoln Leadership Academy is coming into the game hot, having won their last ten games.
