Softball Recap: Cedar Grove Comes Up Short

Cedar Grove had lost five straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 0-5 to make it six. They fell 8-4 to the West Essex Knights. The Panthers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Knights apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2025.

As for West Essex, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-2. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For West Essex's part, Brooke Gillen (Brooke) made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. Gillen (Brooke) has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one double. Those RBI were her first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gabriella Sia, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That stolen base marked the first that she has snagged this season. Brooke Rampone was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Looking ahead, Cedar Grove will head out on the road to square off against Caldwell at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Chiefs' pitching crew has only allowed one run per game this season, so the Panthers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for West Essex, they will welcome West Orange at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
