Why it's big: One of several impactful matchups from which to choose from in the second round of the Pac-5 Division playoffs Friday.

After an upset loss against JSerra Catholic on Oct. 30, Mater Dei (9-2) responded with two of its best performances of the season. The Monarchs crushed state-ranked Santa Margarita, 45-14, in the regular-season finale, then opened the postseason with a 66-14 drubbing of Lakewood.

Serra (9-2) earned its first Pac-5 playoff win with a 38-20 decision over Westlake last week. Senior quarterback Khalil Tate totaled over 200 yards passing and 100 yards rushing for the sixth time this season. The Arizona recruit has 3,667 total yards in only 10 games.

Names to watch: Tate, a four-star prospect, is one four Serra players in 247Sports' ranking of the Top 50 Class of 2016 prospects in California. Cavaliers defensive end Oluwole Betiku is the No. 1 overall prospect in the state.



Mater Dei quarterback JT Daniels is likely to be mentioned among the top prospects nationally in the Class of 2019. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound freshman has exploded into his first varsity season by passing for 2,457 yards with 29 touchdowns and only four interceptions.
