Softball Recap: Berlin Takes a Loss

Berlin dropped to 8-5 on Thursday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They came up short against the Lewis Mills Spartans, falling 8-2. The Redcoats were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Spartans apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2023.

Berlin saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Callie Jehning, who went 1-for-2 with one home run. Izzy Andersen was another, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one RBI.

As for Lewis Mills, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season. Considering they have won five matchups by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

On Lewis Mills' side, Liza Putnam spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks. With that strong performance, Putnam is now averaging an impressive 5.1 strikeouts per game.

At the plate, Brooke Martineau was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with three RBI, one run, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Michaela LaRose, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI.

Looking ahead, Berlin will head out to square off against Newington at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. As for Lewis Mills, they will face off against Platt at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. The Panthers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 21.2 runs per game on average), something the Spartans will no doubt try to take advantage of.
