Football Recap: Northwest Triumphs

Northwest proved they can win big last Friday (they won by 22) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, they made off with a 42-41 win over the Chesapeake Panthers. The Mohawks pushed the score to 42-21 by the end of the third, a deficit the Panthers cut but never quite recovered from.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Northwest to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jake Brown, who rushed for 125 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 7.8 yards per carry, and also threw for 201 yards and three TDs while completing 82.4% of his passes. Carson Christian was another key player, picking up 134 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Northwest was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 223 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 153 rushing yards in five consecutive matches dating back to last season.

Northwest didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Austin Smith.

Northwest now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Chesapeake, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Northwest and Chesapeake will both get their first taste of in-conference action in their upcoming games. The Mohawks will challenge rival Wheelersburg at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Chesapeake is set to take on their familiar foe Dawson-Bryant at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
