Baseball Recap: Middletown Comes Up Short

If Middletown was riding high fresh off their 13-3 takedown of Lower Lake on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Mustangs fell just short of the Cloverdale Eagles by a score of 7-5 on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Mustangs have suffered since March 20th.

Jon Hawkins was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over 3.2 innings while giving up three earned runs off only two hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in March. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one triple and one run.

In other batting news, Hayden Xavier was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Middletown's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 3-1 (and 7-10 when he doesn't).
