Volleyball Game Preview: Southwest SD Raiders vs. San Diego Academy Cavaliers

The Southwest SD Raiders will head out to face off against the San Diego Academy Cavaliers at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Southwest SD will be strutting in after a victory while San Diego Academy will be coming in after a defeat.

Southwest SD took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out Olympian 3-2. While the Raiders didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-16), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Meanwhile, San Diego Academy suffered their biggest loss since April 16, 2024 on Tuesday. They came up short against Sweetwater, falling 3-0. The Cavaliers haven't had much luck with the Red Devils recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

The defeat didn't mean the game wasn't competitive: Sweetwater scored at least 17 points in every set. The match finished with set scores of 25-23, 25-17, 25-23.

Southwest SD will have to contain Josue Flores as he made an impact in San Diego Academy's last game. He had eight digs and two aces. Rudy Nieto also deserves some recognition as he had his first block of the season.

Southwest SD has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-6 record this season. San Diego Academy's loss dropped their record down to 4-4.

Southwest SD took their win against San Diego Academy in their previous matchup back in February of 2024 by a conclusive 3-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Southwest SD since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
