Baseball Game Preview: St. Joseph Central Irish vs. Calhoun Red Devils

The St. Joseph Central Irish will venture away from home to challenge the Calhoun Red Devils at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. St. Joseph Central is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last eight games.

St. Joseph Central took a six-run defeat the last time they faced off against Man, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Irish won by a run and slipped past the Hillbillies 5-4.

Wyatt Pence spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits.

At the plate, St. Joseph Central's victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Cam Kellar, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Calhoun). They were the clear victors by a 15-5 margin over Van on Friday. The win continues a trend for the Red Devils in their matchups with the Bulldogs: they've now won three in a row.

St. Joseph Central pushed their record up to 14-4 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games. As for Calhoun, their record is now 6-12.

St. Joseph Central beat Calhoun 4-1 in their previous meeting back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Irish since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
