Softball Game Preview: Holmdel Hornets vs. Raritan Rockets

The Holmdel Hornets will venture away from home to challenge the Raritan Rockets at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Holmdel 2.6, Raritan 2.1) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Raritan will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: Holmdel extended their winning streak to four on Tuesday. The Hornets were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over Freehold Boro. The Hornets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by six runs or more this season.

Meanwhile, Raritan had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Monday. They walked away with a 7-2 victory over the Falcons.

Katelyn Ruta was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. That's the most hits she has posted over her last eight games.

In other batting news, Madison Regiec was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those two runs gave her a new career-high. Holly Bellofatto was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs.

Raritan pushed their record up to 14-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Holmdel, their record is now 8-3.

Holmdel came up short against Raritan in their previous matchup last Monday, falling 5-0. Can the Hornets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
