League recap: Gainesville extends winning streak with victory over Clarke Central

AAAAA Region 8 recap October 22, 2013

Adding to the longest winning streak in AAAAA Region 8 this week, Gainesville beat Clarke Central 56-28. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.

Cedar Shoals moved up to 214 from 258 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Jaguars were able to move up by beating Apalachee 35-6.

Gainesville's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Deshaun Watson threw for 238 and 3 touchdowns and Jay Gaudlock had 81 yards receiving. On the ground Michael Byrd contributed 80 yards. Chastin Newman helped Gainesville's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 60 yards.

Byrd was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 13 carries, he ran for 80 yards as Bruce Miller's team beat the Gladiators. Watson also contributed to the rushing game with 79 yards on the ground.

Gainesville's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Red Elephants feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Watson has thrown for 2,358 yards and 29 touchdowns this season, while Gaudlock has 60 catches for 855 yards.

A big matchup in AAAAA Region 8 this week will be when Clarke Central takes on Flowery Branch. Ahren Self's team is currently in third, while the Falcons are in second.

Heritage fell to Flowery Branch 33-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
