Baseball Recap: Oscar Smith Triumphs

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Oscar Smith ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They had just enough and edged out the Indian River Braves 2-1. The victory continues a trend for the Tigers in their matchups with the Braves: they've now won three in a row.

Dominick Zak was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Oscar Smith is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 1-3 otherwise. Zak was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Zak wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Braden Copeland, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Oscar Smith's win was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 4-3. As for Indian River, their defeat was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 3-6.

Coming up, Oscar Smith will square off against Gray's Creek on Saturday. The Bears will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Tigers surely won't give up without a fight. As for Indian River, they will be playing at home against Cape Henlopen at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
