Baseball Recap: Salem Wildcats vs. Mt. Vernon Rams
Salem had to kick off their season on the road on Tuesday, but they showed no ill effects. They had just enough and edged out the Mt. Vernon Rams 7-6. The Wildcats have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Rams, too.
Rhett Detering made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single walk, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in March of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March of 2024.

In other batting news, Jalen Inlow was excellent, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in doubles (two).
Looking ahead, Salem will be defending their home field for the first time this season when they go up against Murphysboro at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Mt. Vernon, they wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, an 11-5 loss against Civic Memorial on the 19th.
