Preview: Providence Grove Patriots vs. Asheboro Blue Comets
Providence Grove is 8-2 against Asheboro since November of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Providence Grove Patriots will head out on the road to face off against the Asheboro Blue Comets at 6:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Providence Grove has five straight victories, Asheboro has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Last Tuesday, Providence Grove beat Southern Guilford 43-30. Given Providence Grove's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 212th, while Southern Guilford is ranked 498th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Providence Grove's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from ASIA STEVERSON, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of BROOKE INGRAM, who scored 12 points along with 5 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Asheboro was the victim of a tough 59-39 defeat at the hands of Uwharrie Charter on Friday. Asheboro has not had much luck with Uwharrie Charter recently, as the team's come up short the last two times they've met.
The losing side was boosted by Ellen Long, who scored 14 points along with 5 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Malaika Khan, who scored 8 points.
Providence Grove's victory bumped their season record to 5-1 while Southern Guilford's defeat dropped theirs to 1-4.
Providence Grove skirted past Asheboro 71-68 in their previous meeting back in November. The rematch might be a little tougher for Providence Grove since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
