Softball Game Preview: Mott Corsairs vs. Walled Lake Central Vikings

Mott is 1-9 against Walled Lake Central since April of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Corsairs will face off against the Vikings at 12:00 p.m. Mott has given up an average of 13.9 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Mott fell victim to South Lyon East and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 15-0 to the Cougars, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Corsairs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

While Walled Lake Central didn't have the best season last year (they finished 2-13), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Groves on Friday, sneaking past 6-4. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Vikings.

Walled Lake Central got a great performance from Katelynn Cole as she struck out seven batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk).

At the plate, Jessica Fick and Taylor Combs did most of the damage at the plate: Fick went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double, while Combs went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. That's the most runs Fick has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Izabel Mehta, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

Walled Lake Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 5-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Walled Lake Central pushed their record up to 7-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. As for Mott, their loss dropped their record down to 1-13.

Mott suffered a grim 22-7 defeat to Walled Lake Central when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Corsairs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
