Softball Preview: Indian River Indians vs. Smyrna Eagles
The Indian River Indians will head out on the road to square off against the Smyrna Eagles at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Smyrna took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Indian River, who comes in off a win.
The third road game was the charm for Indian River, as they earned their first road win of the season. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Cape Henlopen on Thursday and snuck past 9-8. The victory was just what Indian River needed coming off of an 11-0 defeat in their prior contest.
Megan Daisey was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and four unearned) runs off eight hits. Daisey was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and a double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sophie Scurci, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Parker O'Shields was another key contributor, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Smyrna fell victim to Laurel and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They took a 5-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bulldogs. Smyrna has struggled against Laurel recently, as their matchup on Tuesday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
The win got Indian River back to even at 3-3. As for Smyrna, they now have a losing record at 2-3.
Indian River skirted past Smyrna 2-1 in their previous meeting back in April of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for Indian River since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
