Basketball Game Preview: Horn Lake Eagles vs. Southaven Chargers

The Horn Lake Eagles will head out to square off against the Southaven Chargers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Horn Lake's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last eight matches.

If Horn Lake beats Southaven with 70 points on Friday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two contests with that exact score. Horn Lake managed a 70-66 win over Oxford on Tuesday. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 18th, while the Chargers are ranked 65th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, after a string of four wins, Southaven's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They fell just short of Lake Cormorant by a score of 54-52. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Chargers have suffered since January 12, 2024.

Horn Lake will need focus on slowing down Cael Jones, one of several Southaven players who made an impact when they last played. He posted 16 points and six boards. Another player making a difference was Jayven Welch, who had ten points.

Horn Lake pushed their record up to 18-4 with the victory, which was their sixth straight on the road. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 73.0 points per game. As for Southaven, their loss dropped their record down to 10-8.

Horn Lake couldn't quite finish off Southaven when the teams last played back in December of 2024 and fell 52-50. Can Horn Lake avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
