Augusta Christian extends home winning streak to five

Recap: Augusta Christian Lions vs. Cardinal Newman Cardinals

Even though the Augusta Christian Lions have not done well against the Cardinal Newman Cardinals recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Augusta Christian managed a 42-38 win over Cardinal Newman. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Augusta Christian.

Augusta Christian got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Savannah Witt out in front who scored seven points along with six assists and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Makenna Ellis, who scored 14 points along with two steals and two blocks.

Despite the loss, Cardinal Newman saw an underclassman step up: Teonna Draughn scored 24 points along with five assists and four steals. That was a full 63.2% of Cardinal Newman's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kristin Moye, who scored four points along with two steals.

Augusta Christian pushed their record up to 14-4 with that victory, which was their fifth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.0 points per game. As for Cardinal Newman, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-8 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Augusta Christian will face off against Mead Hall Episcopal School at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Allowing an average of 64.7 points per game, Mead Hall Episcopal School has struggled on the defensive end, but that doesn't have to be the case in this contest. As for Cardinal Newman, they will head out on the road to face off against Ben Lippen at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
