Softball Recap: Wheeling Central Catholic Takes a Loss

Wheeling Central Catholic extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 8-6 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 1-0 heartbreaker at the hands of the Martins Ferry Purple Riders. Considering the last time the Maroon Knights couldn't score was back in March, the team can't take the result too hard.

As for Martins Ferry, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 20-3. The one-run effort marked their lowest-scoring match of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

For Martins Ferry's part, the result came thanks to Maddie Lucas's shutout, as she gave up just two hits and racked up seven Ks. Lucas has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Giana Chirpas, who went 1-for-2 with one home run.

Wheeling Central Catholic does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Martins Ferry, they will be taking part in a tournament against Claymont at 5:00 p.m. on the 14th.
