The Mercer Mustangs will face off against the Sharon Tigers at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Mercer is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
On Monday, Mercer needed a bit of extra time to put away West Middlesex. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Big Reds, sneaking past 4-3. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mustangs.
Cole Fisher was excellent, going 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Meanwhile, Sharon was not the first on the board on Wednesday, but they got there more often. Everything went their way against Hickory as they made off with an 8-2 win. The Tigers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matchups by six runs or more this season.
Coen Fertig was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Fertig was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Anthony Thomas, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Derek Douglas, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Sharon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .406. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hickory only posted a batting average of .167.
Sharon is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Mercer, they pushed their record up to 11-4 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Mercer has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Sharon struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
