Basketball Recap: A Sykes' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Grant over Rapides

Grant lost against Rapides back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Grant Cougars fell 51-39 to the Rapides Mustangs. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Several Cougars players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was A Sykes, who went 6 for 12 en route to 13 points and three blocks. The dominant performance also gave Sykes a new career-high in assists (three). A Sykes was another key player, going 5 of 10 on his way to 11 points and eight rebounds.

Zayveian Johnson continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Rapides, going 9 for 22 en route to 27 points and six boards. That makes it 12 consecutive games in which Johnson has scored at least a third of Rapides' points. Another player making a difference was Antwon Jones, who posted eight points along with five rebounds and four steals.

Grant's loss dropped their record down to 5-15. As for Rapides, they moved to 7-14 with that victory, which also ended their three-game losing streak.

Grant has already played their next contest, a 57-45 win against Georgetown on the 28th. Rapides has also already played their next matchup (against Port Barre), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
