Basketball Recap: Whiteville Comes Up Short

Whiteville lost against East Bladen back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Whiteville Wolfpack took a blow against the East Bladen Eagles, falling 72-33. The Wolfpack were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 38-12.

Whiteville's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Elayzia Dawson, who went 6-for-11 to rack up 13 points. Dawson is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as she's posted one of at least 55% in the last four games she's played. Ceonna Dennis was another key player, putting up nine points.

Leading East Bladen to victory were NeNe Ward and Laila Smith. Ward went 7-for-10 on her way to 21 points in addition to seven steals and six assists, while Smith almost dropped a double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Smith a new career-high in shooting accuracy (89%). Another player making a difference was Cabria Baldwin, who posted nine points and four steals.

Whiteville's loss dropped their record down to 8-13. As for East Bladen, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 20-3 record this season.

Whiteville wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 48-32 win against South Columbus on the 14th. As for East Bladen, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 68-21 victory against West Bladen on the 13th.
