Football Game Preview: Northwest Mohawks vs. Oak Hill Oaks

The Northwest Mohawks will venture away from home to square off against the Oak Hill Oaks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Northwest has three straight victories, Oak Hill has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Northwest is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They breezed past Waverly to the tune of 59-31 on Friday. The Mohawks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four contests by 21 points or more this season.

It was another big night for Jake Brown, who threw for 313 yards and three TDs while completing 78.9% of his passes, and also rushed for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Those 313 passing yards gave him a new career-high. Northwest's leading receiver Austin Smith was Brown's top target yet again, picking up 171 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Northwest was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 224 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 166 rushing yards in five consecutive matchups.

Another reason for the win was Northwest's imposing defensive line, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Ean Marshall, Landon Hodge, and Domenick Stone, who each picked up one sack apiece.

Meanwhile, Oak Hill had to suffer through a 46-8 loss at the hands of Portsmouth West.

Northwest's win bumped their record up to 6-3. As for Oak Hill, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-8.

Everything went Northwest's way against Oak Hill when the teams last played back in October of 2024, as Northwest made off with a 56-35 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mohawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
