Softball Recap: Mountain View Comes Up Short

Mountain View dropped their record down to 8-9 on Thursday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They lost 6-0 to the Homestead Mustangs. Having soared to a lofty 13 runs in the game before, the Spartans' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

As for Homestead, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games.

For Homestead's part, Mountain View's batters probably weren't too happy with Mackenzie Smith, who pitched a no hitter and racked up six Ks (she gave up zero walks). Smith has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Leela Menon, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Gwyn Romero, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Coming up, Mountain View will welcome Los Altos at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Eagles have averaged an impressive 6.5 runs per game this season. As for Homestead, they will head out to face off against Fremont at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
