Basketball Recap: Northern Victorious

While Northern didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-11), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They escaped with a win on Saturday against the Richard Montgomery Rockets by the margin of a single free throw, 65-64. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Patriots.

Alec Johnson was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 24 points and 20 boards. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in steals (five). Another player making a difference was Jeremiah Byrd, who went 5 of 12 en route to 15 points and three steals.

Northern smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

Northern's win bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Richard Montgomery, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-2.

Northern will look to defend their home court on Friday against North Point at 6:00 p.m. Northern is facing North Point at the right time seeing as North Point is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Richard Montgomery, they will face off against Springbrook on January 7, 2025.
