Basketball Recap: Shawnee Continues Home Dominance on Friday

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Shawnee). They came out on top against the Van Wert Cougars by a score of 82-69 on Friday. Given the Indians' advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 17th, while the Cougars are ranked 304th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Leading Shawnee to victory were Trevick Bertke and Beckett Bertke. Trevick went 12 for 16 on his way to 30 points along with eight boards and five assists, while Beckett almost dropped a double-double on 24 points and nine rebounds. The matchup was Trevick's sixth in a row with at least 15 points. Jagger Hutchins was another key player, putting up ten points and eight boards.

They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Shawnee was working as a unit and finished the game with 25 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in January of 2024.

Shawnee pushed their record up to 17-2 with the victory, which was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season. As for Van Wert, their loss dropped their record down to 8-11.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Shawnee and Botkins will face off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. Shawnee knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past six games -- so hopefully Botkins likes a good challenge. As for Van Wert, they and St. Henry will face off at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played.
