Basketball Recap: Springer Falls Despite Big Games from Sammy Gardner and Darian Roberts

Springer easily dispatched Fox last Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Springer Cardinals fell just short of the Thackerville Wildcats by a score of 50-47 on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cardinals this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 37-31 back in January.

Despite the loss, Springer had strong showings from Darian Roberts, who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine boards, and Sammy Gardner, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds. Those 17 points gave Roberts a new career-high.

Even though they lost, Springer smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in nine consecutive contests.

Springer's defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 14-9. As for Thackerville, their victory bumped their record up to 9-7.

Springer has already played their next match, a 77-66 loss against Elmore City-Pernell on the 6th. As for Thackerville, they will be playing at home against Paoli at 8:00 p.m. on February 11th.
