Basketball Game Preview: Kearney Catholic Stars vs. Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays

The Kearney Catholic Stars will venture away from home to take on the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays on Thursday. Kearney Catholic is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.2 points per game this season.

Last Saturday, Kearney Catholic came up short against Scotus and fell 62-53. While losing is never fun, the Stars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 102nd, while the Shamrocks are ranked 32nd).

Despite the defeat, Kearney Catholic got top-tier performance from Owen Axmann, who posted 20 points and five rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Axmann a new career-high in assists (four). Another player making a difference was Will Hogeland, who earned ten points and eight boards.

Meanwhile, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Ashland-Greenwood beat Malcolm 47-43 on Tuesday. The Bluejays haven't had any issues with the Clippers recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.

Ashland-Greenwood's win bumped their record up to 14-5. As for Kearney Catholic, their loss dropped their record down to 10-9.

Kearney Catholic suffered a grim 59-33 defeat to Ashland-Greenwood when the teams last played back in February of 2024. Can Kearney Catholic avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
