Basketball Game Preview: Denver South Ravens vs. Northfield Nighthawks

A classic North v. South matchup is on the schedule. The Denver South Ravens will head out to square off against the Northfield Nighthawks at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Denver South has now lost seven straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since January 3.

On Saturday, Denver South took a blow against Denver East, falling 69-32. While losing is never fun, the Ravens can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 113th, while the Angels are ranked 13th).

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Alex Gehring, who posted eight points and six steals. She has become a key player for Denver South: the team is 4-2 when she posts at least three steals, but 4-8 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Cecelia Sheperd, who scored eight points.

Meanwhile, Northfield came up short against Vista PEAK Prep on Friday and fell 72-65. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (61), the Nighthawks still had to take the loss.

Like Denver South, Northfield lost despite seeing results from several players. Madison Bethel led the charge by going 6 of 10 en route to 16 points. Bethel is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last six games she's played. Kate Snodgrass was another key player, putting up ten points along with six rebounds and five blocks.

Denver South's loss dropped their record down to 8-10. As for Northfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-8.

Denver South was taken down by Northfield 75-31 when the teams last played back in January. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Northfield's LaPorsha Allen, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 16 boards. Now that Denver South knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
