Basketball Recap: Tyler Hugo's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Nunamiut over Cook Inlet Academy

Nunamiut kicked off their season on the road on Thursday and hit a couple of potholes. They lost 63-38 to the Cook Inlet Academy Eagles. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Amaguq have suffered since February 16, 2024.

Nunamiut's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tyler Hugo, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 19 rebounds. Hugo has been hot, having posted eight or more boards the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kevin Gordon, who posted two points in addition to eight rebounds and eight steals.

Ian McGarry continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Cook Inlet Academy, putting up 30 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which McGarry has scored at least a third of Cook Inlet Academy's points. Zach Armstrong was another key player, posting 12 points.

The win (which was Cook Inlet Academy's seventh in a row) raised their record to 7-2.

Nunamiut has already played their next match, a 56-46 loss against Unalaska on the 17th. As for Cook Inlet Academy, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 64-41 defeat against Shaktoolik on the 17th.
