Wood has gone 8-2 against Fairfield recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Wood Wildcats are taking a road trip to challenge the Fairfield Falcons at 4:00 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
On Thursday, Wood needed a bit of extra time to put away River City. They won by a run and slipped past the Raiders 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Wildcats have posted since February 20th.
The team relied heavily on Bryan Smith, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. What's more, he posted two hits, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Tristan Drummond also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Wood hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as River City struck out seven times.
Meanwhile, everything went Fairfield's way against Foothill on Thursday as Fairfield made off with a 16-4 win. The Falcons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.
Desten Torrence was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Tristen Smith, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Fairfield has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 10.8 runs. Wood moved to 3-7 with that victory, which also ended their five-game losing streak.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Wood has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Fairfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Wood was able to grind out a solid win over Fairfield when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 5-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for Wood since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
