Baseball Game Preview: Discovery Spartans vs. Lake Placid Dragons

The Discovery Spartans will head out on the road to square off against the Lake Placid Dragons at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Discovery is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.

Discovery fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Auburndale on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Bloodhounds by a score of 6-5.

Tylor Timmons was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. He is becoming a predictor of Discovery's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 3-1 (and 4-11 when he doesn't).

On the hitting side, Discovery saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Edrick Rivera, who went 2-for-5 with one stolen base and one RBI. Evan Devore was another, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Meanwhile, Lake Placid was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They fell 6-1 to Sebring.

Discovery's record is now 7-12. As for Lake Placid, their record now sits at 7-14.

Discovery's speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's matchup. The Spartans have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.6 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Lake Placid, though, as they've been averaging only 0.8 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Discovery continue to outrun the ball?

Everything went Discovery's way against Lake Placid in their previous meeting back in March, as Discovery made off with a 12-6 win. Do the Spartans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Dragons turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
