Basketball Recap: Malachi Martis' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Windermere Prep over Discovery

Windermere Prep was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They fell 68-61 to the Discovery Spartans. The Lakers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Spartans apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2023.

Windermere Prep's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Malachi Martis, who went 7 of 12 en route to 17 points and five rebounds. Martis has been hot recently, having also posted two or more blocks the last three times he's played. Brandon Bass Jr. was another key player, putting up 18 points and seven boards.

Even though they lost, Windermere Prep was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive matches.

Discovery was led to victory by Jordan Gunter and Darius Livingston. Gunter went 8 for 12 on his way to 22 points and eight rebounds, while Livingston went 8 of 15 to rack up 20 points. Those 22 points gave Gunter a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Eric Dailey, who posted 13 points.

Windermere Prep's defeat dropped their record down to 13-13. As for Discovery, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 20-5.

Looking ahead, Windermere Prep will challenge Tampa Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on February 12th. One thing working in Tampa Catholic's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 17 contests. As for Discovery, they have already played their next game, a 63-61 loss against Lake Highland Prep on the 7th.
